The front door quadrants, side circular-over-rectangle sound apertures having finely pierced giltwood frets backed with red silk. The top bearing a brass swinging handle and four brass pinecone finials and the bottom ending with a shaped apron over a cavetto moulding.

There were a number of Clockmakers by the name of James Smith working in London during the latter part of the 18th century however, because of the expense of lacquered clocks and the quality of this movement, the probable maker is likely to be the most eminent. James Smith was a notable maker and is recorded as working in Jermyn Street, London, from 1776 to 1794, he was also Clockmaker to King George III

* This clock is a fine example of its type and apart from having historical repairs to the lacquer, is extremely original. The Verge escapement has been converted to Anchor Recoil as in most cases but the price given will include careful and meticulous re-conversion to Verge using antique material and the original holes.

** In the 17th century, The East India Company traded in lacquered objects from the Far East, these items quickly caught on as the latest fashion and became all the rage. The demand was such that English craftsmen began making items and imitating the decoration by building up with gesso and then mixing shellac and pigments and also gold and silver leaf to achieve the desired effect. The design was popular throughout the 18th century and lacquered bracket clocks were amongst the most expensive because they had to be finished by artists. This clock would have probably stood in 'pride of place' in a large London town house during the latter part of the 18th century and been extremely expensive.
