A good, large and impressive, ormolu French four glass mantel clock for sale. Made by Raingo c.1835 (late Empire).

Original throughout, large, late Empire French mantel clock.

Stock No:   14118

The large circular movement measuring 4 5/8" in diameter and with an internal Brocot Dead-beat escapement and countwheel striking the hours and halfs on a large tuned bell. The backplate being signed with the maker's stamp and numbered 1722. Also having a Sun King ormolu pendulum bob.

Behind a 5 1/2" diameter, bowed white enamel dial with blue Roman numerals within a minute ring and an inner circle with three-line-and-gilt-dot half hour markings, outer large Arabic fives, a Brocot regulation post at the '60' and the centre being signed "RAINGO FRES" (Abbreviated Freres - Brothers) above centre and "PARIS" below. Also having ornate and pierced ormolu hands. A finely cast hinged bezel with a bevelled bow glass is fixed to the dial backing plate that bears a concentric leaf design.

Contained in an impressive and ornate, ormolu four glass case of good proportions, also numbered 1722 and having it's original fire gilding. The stepped top having a cornice with egg-and-dart casting to the lower side, a small frieze above a further ornate moulding followed by the plain case frame that carries finely moulded, one-piece glass panel frames. All the thick panels have a wide bevel, the front section is in three pieces to accommodate the movement dial and bezel and the bevelling further conforms to the bezel. The bezel is encircled with a bow and ribbon casting to the top and a double laurel spray to the lower portion. The rear of the case has a door and the whole terminates with a stepped and recessed base with returned corners, top ornate moulding and good three-dimensional plaques portraying putto to three sides.

* Raingo Freres are listed as working circa 1834 to 1860 and were very fine makers. Best known for Orrery clocks etc. but also made fine carriage clocks. In the 1860's Dent of London purchased clocks from them (shown in old stock books).

** This is a fine example of a four glass mantel clock and is in superb original condition - the dial, panels and movement are undamaged and the case carries almost all of its original gilding. It is a substantial clock that would have been very expensive when made. It falls into the late French Empire period and is rare because of its condition and quality.
