Verge escapement bracket clock. Rare London moonphase dial, ebonised case. Circa 1770.

A rare and attractive London made Georgian moonphase bracket clock.

Stock No:   14126

The eight day duration, five pillar (knopped), double fusee movement with its original Verge escapement and rack striking the hours on a bell.

Behind a 6 3/4" wide, break-arch brass dial with phases-of-the-moon disc in the arch, very unusual diametrical patterning to the gilded centre and arch hemispheres, gilt brass corner spandrels and silvered moon disc chapter edge, calendar ring above the VI, drop-mouth maker's cartouche bearing "Wilmer (of) London" to the lower portion of the centre and chapter ring with Roman numerals, minute ring and large outer Arabic fives. Also having well cut, blued steel hands. The moon disc retaining almost all of its original paintwork and in good condition.

Contained in an ebonised fruitwood veneered case with an oak carcass. The well-formed bell top having a good cast brass swinging handle with its original gilding and aesthetically pleasing, well cut mouldings which flow onto the main case with moulded and lamb's ear upright corners, fully glazed doors and side upper rounds over conforming side windows, door quarters the front of which has the original gilded brass, silk backed Rococo frets. Terminating with a lower Cavetto moulding above a short plain plinth which in turn is mounted upon four moulded brass block feet that also retain their original gilding.

* It is very rare to get a Georgian period London made clock that has phases-of-the-moon. This is principally because farming was not necessary in the area however, this feature could be successfully used as a 'High Tide' dial for the River Thames. Little is known of the maker who was probably 'Thomas Wilmer', some may assume that the clock was signed on his behalf but this is improbable. The backplate is plain which suggests that the cost could be kept lower but this is also improbable considering the high quality of the dial and case mountings. The omission of a strike/silent facility indicates that this clock was not needed to be shared between rooms i.e. the bedroom at night so therefore would not have been the only clock in the household - this is unusual. This clock is a delight to see and hear and its features are thought-provoking, questions present themselves which we will probably never know the answers to however, this King George III bracket clock is totally original and beautiful.
