English 5 glass library mantel clock. Fusee movement by Connell and in a small satinwood case. Circa 1845.

An exquisite and desirable small timepiece.

Stock No:   14228

The eight day duration, chain fusee movement with semi Dead-beat escapement, pendulum holdfast and almost spherical pendulum bob with micrometer regulation. The rectangular backplate signed by the maker "CONNELL. LONDON" and numbered "No. 988".

Behind just a 3 1/8" wide 'over square' silvered and wax-filled engraved brass dial. Having a divided minute ring with Roman numerals within and the maker's signature and address of "83 Cheapside" to the centre. The outer top and bottom areas are filled with well executed floral Rococo designs and having Fleur-de-Lys blued steel hands. The dial being surrounded by a silvered, cast brass, chamfered sight frame.

Contained in a satinwood veneered case of good proportions and patina. The raised top having a thick bevelled glass panel, the top separation Cavetto moulding having gadrooning below it and the lower cushion moulding sat above a moulded plinth with four low feet. Both doors and the sides having a further four thick bevelled glass panels.

* This small fusee timepiece is simply beautiful. It is superior, which is indicated by the way all the case mouldings return to all four sides - usually the back is left plain with no attached mouldings. In this case the clock can be placed on the centre of a table and look attractive from any angle. William Connell was born about c.1815 and was working from 1839 to 1869. Many of his clocks were signed "Late Ganthony" whose excellent business was taken over by him and like Ganthony, he only produced good quality clocks.
