James McCabe, Oriental style striking mantel/four glass Library clock. Circa 1835.

A rare and good English mantel clock by this very eminent maker.

The eight day duration, double chain fusee movement, having maintaining power and original fully jewelled, ratchet toothed, side lever platform escapement with a single piece balance wheel, screw held jewel chatons and graduated regulation scale. Also having five typical McCabe baluster pillars, rack striking on a bell and the lower portion of the backplate being signed James McCabe, Royal Exchange, London.

Behind a one piece, 3 1/2" square, gilded and finely engraved dial with conforming feet. Having black Roman numerals and minute dots to a smooth chapter area and the outer corners covered with floral Rococo engraving. The centre having conforming engraving with an engine turned central background. The gilded chamfered sight frame being fully engraved with wheat-ear design and set within the door. The matching steel hands are also of typical 'cruciform' style.

Contained in an oriental style mahogany '4-glass' case. The pagoda style 'roof' set with a large bevelled glass panel and the four corners being set with scrolled horns. The top panel being bridged by a cast ormolu swinging handle depicting opposing Chinese Dragon heads.
The front locking door and sides have further thick bevelled glass panels and the rear locking door has a silk-backed, wooden sound fret.
The lower Cavetto moulding has an opposing gadrooned top edge and a scroll carved and shaped plinth incorporating splayed feet.

* This clock is typical of the quality and imagination that is to be expected by such an eminent maker. The case has minor damage that can be corrected otherwise, it is in excellent condition. The case retains its original colour and upon close examination the movement and dial are obviously first quality.
