French four glass striking mantel clock in an ormolu and marble case. Circa 1900.

An unusual and visually stunning mantel or table clock.

The eight day duration circular 'Movement de Paris' with an internal, self-setting, Brocot style Dead-beat escapement and rack striking the hours and halfs on a coiled gong. Also having a temperature compensated, double phial mercurial pendulum and Brocot regulation bar which protrudes through the dial. The backplate being marked "A1" within an oval and having a serial number of "11078".

Behind a four inch diameter, matt gilded, two piece ormolu dial with finely cast border designs, black Arabic numerals and minute dots. The centre bearing a pierced floral disc. The Brocot regulator protrudes above the figure "12" and the steel hands are Fleur-de-Lys design. The dial is set within a finely cast, decorated gilt bezel.

Contained in a 'Four-glass' case. Having full size bevelled glass panels to the sides and also set within the front and rear doors. The angular pediment and plinth are constructed from well chosen patterned Rouge marble and are well shaped with good moulding. Set between the marble is the gilded top and bottom plates, rear and front door frames, reeded columns with Corinthian capitals and an upper ornamental frieze to the front. The plinth is finally mounted upon four angled, ormolu plate feet.

* This clock would have been intended for retail by someone other than the maker therefore, it bears no maker's signature. The marking of "A1" within an oval indicates that it is of 'First quality'. It is a beautiful clock and the glass panels allow the movement to be viewed in all its glory!
