French, four glass, gilded oval mantel clock with visible escapement. Circa 1880.

An attractive and well proportioned oval 4-glass mantel clock.

The eight day duration circular movement with visible Dead-beat Brocot escapement with garnet impulse stones also, a gilded, double phial, temperature compensated mercurial pendulum and rack striking the hours and halfs on a bell.

Behind a 3 3/4" diameter, two-tiered white enamel dial with black Roman numerals and minute markings, gilded grommets, escape wheel carrier, separator and bezel. Also, spearhead steel hands.

Contained in a gilded brass oval case with four full-length curved and bevelled glass panels, opening front and rear doors and well executed cast top and base sections.

* Oval four-glass clocks are rarer than the usual, square examples. The age cracks to the lower area of the chapter ring and the deposits in the tubes are considered 'Proof of age' however, the dial can be restored perfectly for an additional cost.
