Regency Chamfer top bracket/table clock by Brockbanks & Atkins. In an ebonised case and having an enamel dial. Circa 1820.

A fine example of a Regency English Table clock.

Stock No:   14256

The five pillar, eight day duration, double gut fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, rack striking the hours on a bell also, repeat and strike/silent facilities, micrometer regulation pendulum with parking bracket and the backplate being signed "Brockbanks & Atkins London".

Behind an eight inch diameter, white enamel dial with black Roman numerals, minute ring with diamond and triangle hour markings, "strike" and "Silent" above the numeral XII for the lever, and the maker's signature "BROCKBANKS & ATKINS" (of) "LONDON 1872" (serial number), above and below the centre hole. Having brass 'Spade' hands and a well-cast brass sight ring and locking hinged bezel with bowed glass.

Contained in an ebonised fruitwood veneered oak chamfer-top case. The plain chamfer bearing a cast brass pineapple finial upon a podium, the case front having four recessed triangular panels with quadrant brass framing and positioned around the dial, brass lined canted front edges and top and lower brass strips bordering gadrooned moulding. The sides having ringed carrying handles in floral form and above red silk-backed, rectangular brass, fish-scale sound frets. The plinth being lined with brass plate to three sides and all supported upon four 'Ball-and-Plate' adjustable feet. The strike repeating cord runs out through the base and has a turned brass pull.

* Brockbank and Atkins are considered to have been excellent and noted makers and were best known for Chronometers. These makers are recorded as working together from 1815 to 1839. George Atkins was elected Master of the Clockmaker's Company in 1845 and was taught by and worked with his father, Francis. They worked from 6, Cowper's Court, Cornhill, London.

** This is a particularly nice item of superior quality and it is rare to have an enamel dial instead of the usual, painted iron dial. The stark whiteness is stunning against the black case and it looks superb in all settings whether traditional or contemporary. The clock can be silenced during darkness and commanded to strike the last hour with a gentle tug on the brass pull.
