Marquetry longcase clock by Christopher Gould, London. Eight day movement with an eleven inch dial. Late 17th century.

A handsome Marquetry longcase clock by this famous maker.

The eight day duration, five finned pillar movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and early internal rack striking the hours on a bell.

Behind an 11" square brass dial. Having a silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals, inner quarter divisions, minute ring below the Arabic outer fives - quarterly divided with cruciform, half hour cruciform divisions and the maker's name "Chr(istopher) Gould (of) Londini fecit" spanning between the figures V and VII. The dial centre being finely matted with ringed winding holes, square chamfered and wheat-ear engraved calendar aperture above the VI, circular floral engraved medallion about the centre and a silvered subsidiary seconds ring with Arabic fives. Also having  finely cast and gilded winged cherub's head corner spandrels, pierced and carved steel hands and the middle dial plate edges bearing floral engraving.

Contained in a walnut marquetry case with flat top, 'weather moulding, blind fretwork, rising hood, integral hood pillars, convex throat moulding, full length trunk door with oval lenticle and half-round edge moulding, panelled base and straight plinth. The hood door, throat, trunk door, base and plinth having marquetry, the trunk door, base panel and plinth depicting floral and bird style. The base panel and trunk door having light floral marquetry to the surrounding cross-banding and the sides of the trunk and base having strung walnut panels with cross-banding edges. All of the marquetry is of a good colour and on a dark background and all of the mouldings are cross-grain.

Condition:  The case has been previously well restored, the hood top has been repaired (many rising hoods simply fell off and broke as the rebates often split). The base of the backboard and plinth have also been well repaired (probably necessary due to standing on damp floors). The dial is totally original however, there is now a redundant slot at the top edge where a later strike/silent lever protruded, this has been removed. The movement has had the attention that a clock of this age usually has: The bell has been replaced with a louder and larger one. The worn escapement has been replaced with a Victorian escape wheel and pallets. The clock is original with the exception of the minor changes and repairs mentioned, these are usual and carried out at a time when owners were less particular about conservation and retaining original appearance than they are now, we intend reversing this work using antique metal stock and paying particular and special attention to original appearance. This is for all intents and purposes a good, original clock by an exceptional maker that has been maintained throughout its life of over three centuries.

* Christopher Gould was an exceptional maker and original clocks by him command a high premium. He entered the Clockmakers Company in 1682 and died in 1718. He is recorded as a 'Maker of great repute'.
