Georgian mahogany longcase clock with silvered dial. By Leplastrier of Deal. Circa 1790.

A truly superb and majestic longcase clock in totally original condition.

Stock No:   14214

The eight day duration movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and rack striking the hours on a bell.

Behind a well executed, silvered brass break-arch dial. Having Roman numerals within a divided minute ring and Arabic, outer fives. The centre having conforming upper subsidiary minute dial and lower, calendar date dial, both with Arabic numerals and blued steel, counterpoised, matching hands. The corners are decorated with floral swag designs which are repeated flanking the maker's oval cartouche in the arch. This has a border design and bears the signature "Leplastrier" (in script) and "Deal" (in scripted Old English). The blued steel matching hour and minute hands are of pleasing pierced 'Diamond' style.

Within, a fine quality, figured mahogany case of excellent colour and marking. The hood having a pagoda top with three original cast brass finials - the centre one mounted within a crown being removable if the ceiling height was limiting. The pagoda has a pierced and silked backed wooden sound fret to the centre and the sides have well moulded and fluted flat columns. The sides have further wooden sound frets and the separate pillars are fluted and reeded with brass capitals. The well-figured door has its original lock. Below the Cavetto throat is the trunk with a full length flame veneered break-arch door with elaborate edge moulding and its original lock. The trunk also has fluted and reeded quarter columns with brass capitals to the tops. The panelled base has a double and shaped plinth terminating in flat feet.

* This clock is delightful, it is exactly the thing I look for in a good longcase. The case is London quality, aesthetically perfect and to have retained its crown is staggering - I have not owned one for over twenty years! The originality is also rare and what the discerning purchaser should be trying to obtain. One word to describe this piece is "Elegance".
