A good and rare, transitional English drop-dial fusee wall clock with 14 inch black dial and mahogany case. Circa 1790.

An unusual line inlaid Drop-dial fusee timepiece.

The eight day duration, four knopped pillar, gut fusee movement with arched plates and Anchor Recoil escapement.

Behind a 13 1/2" diameter black iron dial with broad, well executed gilt Roman numerals and minute ring with triangular hour divisions. Also having matching gilt Spade hands and a hinged 'Sheraton' style, heavily cast, cavetto moulded brass bezel and extremely high domed glass. The bezel being locked from within the case indicating that it was used for semi-public purposes.

In a mahogany case with narrow and early style moulded, turned dial surround being integral to the back-box, with side access doors above the trunk drop and a quarter-round foot incorporating a curved, locking double hinged door with cockbeading. The front and foot having a single line ebony stringing.

* This is a rare transitional clock and Horologically important because of the many features similar to a Tavern clock in particular, the dial, surround and arched plates which are classic Tavern clock style also, the movement is mounted upon a seat-board. It was also made towards the end of the classic Tavern clock period - right on the cusp of them evolving into the standard 'English Dial'. It is a most unusual and attractive clock and of a good domestic size. It is highly collectable and would look fabulous in any home.
