English Weight driven trunk, hooded wall clock for sale. Small mahogany cased three day movement. Circa 1812.

A good, rare and extremely attractive 'Gentleman's' trunk timepiece with Alarum.

Stock No:   14083

The three day duration, weight driven, gut barrels, four pillar movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and Alarum train sounding on a bell (also eight day duration) with a shorter than seconds-beating pendulum.

Behind a 7 1/4" square painted iron dial with a falsedial stamped "WALKER & HUGHES. BIRMINGHAM". The original off-white ground paint with black Roman numerals, minute ring with diamond hour markings and having matching steel elaborated diamond style hands.

Contained in a very small and most attractive well-proportioned mahogany case of good patina and colour. Having a substantial, well-formed and moulded break-architectural pediment with Romanesque dentil work and large centre, solid brass urn shaped finial. Followed by a blank frieze above a further moulding above the hood door which is flanked by integral pillars and capitals. The rear also having quarter pillars and the lower hood moulding sits upon a Cavetto shaped throat. The trunk has a short but full-length locking door with nicely shaped top, 'flame' veneer and a brass escutcheon. The base having a double top moulding, quarter round lower moulding and a tapered concave, stepped bottom.

* Though not signed, this is a rare clock. It is in the style of circa 1790 but dates a little later to the early part of the Walker & Hughes (dial makers) partnership (1811 to 1835). It is supremely attractive and for all intents and purposes it is a very small, wall mounted, three day duration longcase clock! Its style, appearance and Alarum train suggest to me that it was made for a Gentleman. Once the Alarum is set it will continue to ring for a short period every twelve hours for the duration of the week - if not needed, it is simply not wound. Mounted quite high on the wall this clock shouts quality and aesthetic beauty.
