Large English Dial fusee wall clock for sale. Fine quality, light oak case, retailed by Mummery and Son, Stafford.

A larger than usual attractive wall clock in original, aged condition.

Stock No:   14110

The substantial eight day duration, four pillar chain fusee movement, with Anchor Recoil escapement and tapered plates.

Behind a fourteen inch diameter painted iron dial. Having black Roman 'GWR' style Roman numerals, minute blocks, hour diamonds and the retailer's name "MUMMERY & SON (of) STAFFORD" above and below centre. Also having black 'Spade' hands and a hinged, glazed brass bezel with silvered sight ring.

Contained in a well-constructed oak case of good original colour. The substantial shaped dial surround being made from sixteen pieces laid in brickwork pattern and highly French polished. The backbox having long access doors to both sides and a locking lower door conforming to the curved bottom.

* This is an extremely original clock that has been maintained to a high degree throughout its life, it is rare to see a movement that has not had irreversible damage inflicted by unqualified repairers. All parts are original and the bezel has tarnished to a nice bronze colour and dial has wear to its top numerals - this is due to reaching up and setting the hands countless times over the years and fingers inadvertently brushing against them. In the spirit of conservation, I have refrained from re-writing the numerals and polishing the bezel in order to allow the purchaser to make this choice. The pictures show the degree of originality and also the condition of the movement before cleaning. This would make a fine kitchen clock.

** GWR (Great Western Railway) style numerals were developed by the railway company so that the time could be more easily read even at an angle. Serifs were considered unimportant and all the finer lines to the V's and X's were thickened. Mummery & Son were Jewellers in Stafford and went into liquidation in 1960. The fine old building that they traded from was demolished shortly afterwards.
