Antique watchmaker's 'Topping' tool for sale. Circa late 19th century.

An extremely well made and attractive tool.

Stock No:   14224

These tools are hand powered by turning the handle on the large wheel which in turn drives the cutting spindle by a figure of eight line. The disc cutter is spiral for one revolution which enables it to automatically index the wheel that is being reformed after 'stretching'.

This example is extremely well made and sturdy and constructed from high quality polished brass and steel. It is fully adjustable. It is fixed to its original drawered oak base (no longer contains cutters).

The tools when polished and restored make magnificent ornaments but can also be used practically for the reforming of watch wheels - when the teeth became worn the wheel was stretched by either hammering or rolling and then the teeth were reformed perfectly in these tools, they were a must for practical watchmakers.

Condition:         Requires careful and patient restoring to the finish but has no wear.

Circa:                Victorian.

Dimensions:     11 1/4" wide x 9 1/2" high. The box is 10" wide x 6 1/2" deep x 1 3/4" high.

Price:                £450.00.
