Miniature verge bracket or table clock in an ebonised case. Quarter repeating, made by Anthony Harrison, London C.1720.

A stunning and rare small table clock made during the reign of King George I.

Stock No:   14382

The eight day duration single gut fusee, five finned pillared, 'silent pull' movement with original Verge escapement. Profusely engraved backplate, heart shaped backcock apron and repeat spring barrel. Sounding the hours upon demand on a single bell followed by the quarters on two further nested bells. Having an early and well-executed fusee and great wheel assembly and quarter work operated by a pull cord that can unusually be passed through either side of the case.

The backplate engraving being of superb quality scroll design and bearing the maker's signature "Anth(ony) Harrison (of) LONDON" within a wheat-ear bordered oval. The heart shaped back cover depicts an extremely fine Grotesque.

Behind only a 4 3/4" wide brass break-arch dial with floral basket spandrels. Silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals, inner quarter hour ring, mid minute ring, half hour diamond markings, outer Arabic fives, four hourly slim diamond markings and an outer single ring. Also having a silvered calendar month ring to the arch with Arabic fives, a silvered and engraved false bob and backing through the curved and chamfered aperture and also a cushion shaped silvered maker's cartouche below the centre bearing "Anthony Harrison (of) LONDON" in Old English script.

The areas within the chapter rings are finely matted and there is a false winding hole and square to aesthetically balance the single offset winding. The dial also has finely cut and finished blued steel hands.

Contained in an ebonised fruitwood veneer, on oak, inverted bell top case of small proportions. Having a solid silver, knopped swinging handle, pleasing mouldings, silk backed sound frets to the door quarters, full-length break-arch glazed side apertures and break-arch door glass that are all edged with well cut and elaborate moulding. Also having a repeat cord with a silvered brass knob and the case stood upon four short block feet.

* The false winding hole is a nice feature on this clock and the square within it is larger so that the key cannot be placed on it by mistake. It gives the appearance of the movement being a double fusee. Another nice feature is both case sides having hole grommets so that the repeat cord can be placed through either one for convenience for example, which side of the bed the clock is placed during the night.

** Anthony Harrison of London was born circa 1679 and apprenticed in April 1693 to Joanna May (widow of William) until 1700. He was apparently still working up to 1726.
