Georgian English Table clock with silvered mounts and dial. Circa 1795.

A sleek, late 18th century ebonised table clock.

Stock No:   14281

The eight day duration, five knopped pillar, double gut fusee movement. Having its original Anchor Recoil escapement and rack striking the hours on a top-mounted bell. Also, strike/silent feature and a well-shaped pendulum rod with encapsulator for transit.

Behind a 6 3/4" wide, silvered brass break-arch dial that is well engraved. The encircled chapter having small Roman hour numerals, marked minute circle and outer, Arabic fives. The upper centre bearing the retailer's signature "Stedman & Vardon (of) New Bond Street (London)" and the lower centre having a subsidiary calendar dial with Arabic numerals. The arch has the strike/silent selector dial. The time hands are matching blued steel, pierced and diamond design and the subsidiary hands are matched 'Arrowhead-and-tail' design.

Contained in a sleek, ebonised fruitwood on oak, inverted bell top case, the proportions being somewhat more slender than is usual. The front and side ebonised sound-frets are backed with grey cloth and the cast, swinging top handle, top corner pineapple finials and splayed OG feet are all silvered.

* Though late 18th century, this clock is stunning yet simple in appearance. The silvering is unusual but works extremely well with the dial and the case. The retailers were considered to be one of the finest Jewellers and Goldsmiths in London at the time and are listed in 'Kent's Directory for 1794'. Their premises, No. 36 New Bond Street still stands and has it's original facade. It is also grade II listed. Though the movement is unsophisticated, it is of great quality and aesthetically beautiful. Unfortunately, the photographs don't do this clock justice, it is much better 'in the flesh'.
