English, Egyptian style, fusee mantel clock. Circa 1850.

A stunning ormolu mounted, marble mantel clock.

The substantial eight day duration, chain fusee, circular movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, Vulliamy style double bracket back cock and pendulum transit locking.

Behind a 5 1/4" diameter gilded brass dial with black Roman numerals, minute and hour markings and the maker's name "Adams. (36) Lombard Street" (London) below the numeral XII. The centre portion of the dial is very finely and accurately engine turned and the matching 'cruciform' hands are typical Adams' style. It is fitted to a finely cast and ornamental, ormolu bezel.

Contained in an angular white with beige-marked marble case. The flat top carries a large, well executed, single piece, ormolu representation of an Egyptian Sphinx. The pediment is moulded to the under edge and sits atop the tapered angular movement housing which bears ormolu, half round papyrus columns to the flanking edges. The central section of the case is mounted upon a triple-stepped plinth.

* Thomas Adams worked from this address from 1850 before moving to Cannon Street. He is recorded as being clockmaker to H.R.H. Prince Albert. He died in 1870. This is a typical example of 19th century English clockmaking at it's best, simple but pleasing to the eye. It would not look out of place in almost any style of room.
