Rare automata, triple pad top, table clock by Joseph Irish of Portsmouth. Circa 1790.

A very rare See-saw automata bracket clock.

Stock No:   14329

The eight day duration, double fusee, five pillar movement (now with Anchor Recoil escapement) and rack striking the hours on a bell. The backplate is fully and crisply engraved with urn and floral designs and the heavy pendulum bob has micrometer regulation.

Behind a 7" wide, silvered and painted break-arch dial. The engraved chapter has Roman hour numerals, minute ring and outer, Arabic fives and the corners and arch border have finely executed floral designs. The centre also has a chamfered drop-mouth calendar date aperture and the maker's name "Irish (of) Portsmouth" in script. The blued steel hands are serpentine in style and the arch bears a painted country scene with automata figures of a boy and a girl upon a see-saw which operates from the swing of the pendulum.

Contained in a triple pad top, break-arch ebonised case. The central pad having a swinging carrying handle and all the pads are brass framed. The door also has an inner brass quadrant frame and is also edged with brass rod. The side sound apertures contain red silk-backed brass fish scale frets and the case stands upon four brass, splayed, ogee feet.

* This is an extremely rare example of a table clock. Very little is known about the maker but he is likely to have also traded as Joseph Irish of Havant - a maker of the same era who also made automata clocks. The automata is fascinating to watch as the children continually rock on the see-saw enjoying themselves. The small size of this clock also makes it more desirable.
