A good Georgian, brass bound table clock by John Cowell, Royal Exchange, London. Circa 1765.

A good example of a Verge escapement bracket clock with Alarum.

The substantial, five pillar, double fusee movement with its original Verge and knife edge escapement and rack striking the hours on a bell. Also having a strike/silent selector, pull-wind Alarum, trip hour repeat and profusely engraved Rococo style backplate, back cock, apron, Alarum wheel, return spring and fixing brackets.

Behind a 7" wide, break-arch brass dial. The finely matted centre having a chamfered square calendar date aperture and an elaborate, chamfered 'axe head' maker's plate aperture with the silvered recessed plate signed "John Cowell, Royal Exchange, London" in script. Also having a silvered chapter ring, date ring, Alarum setting disc to the centre and Strike/Silent chapter ring to the arch with a matted centre. The corner and arch cast brass spandrels are of Rococo style. The Serpentine style hands are blued steel and the hour hand has a setting tail.

Contained in a good, brass bound, ebonised fruitwood veneer case. The inverted bell top has a brass swinging carrying handle and the major mouldings atop and below the doors are of cast brass as are, both door inner framings, the side circular and conforming rectangular glazed viewing aperture framings and both doors, silk-backed frets and framings. The four upright corners to the case are inset quadrant moulded and the case sits upon four cast brass, elaborate, splayed feet.

* This is a very fine brass-bound table clock. The maker, John Cowell was apprenticed in 1752 and free of the Clockmaker's Company from 1759. He worked at Pope's Head Alley, Cornhill and was well known as a maker of fine musical and quarter striking bracket clocks.
