A Good Verge escapement bracket clock with pull quarter repeat, by John Sterland of Nottingham. Circa 1770.

A superior and attractive table/bracket clock.

Stock No:   14336

The very substantial, six knopped pillar movement with attached verge escapement and rack striking the hours on a large bell. Having a strike/silent selector and pull quarter repeating on a nest of a further six graduated bells with unusually, two peels.
The large backplate is fully engraved with a Rococo pattern as are the fixing brackets, repeat pulley wheel cover, back cock and apron.

Behind a 6 3/4" wide, brass break-arch dial with gilt, cast, Rococo corner and arch spandrels, silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals, minute ring and outer, Arabic 5's. The arch carries a silvered Strike/Silent chapter ring and has a matted centre and a shaped, blued steel selector hand. The dial centre is also matted and has a lower, square and chamfered calendar date aperture. The upper portion has a decorative and shaped, chamfered aperture that is backed with a well executed and silvered maker's plate bearing "John Sterland (of) Not(t)ingham". The blued steel hands are well cut and blued.

Contained in an ebonised, fruit-wood veneered oak, 'Bell top' case. The top having a cast brass 'bow', swinging carrying handle and partitioned with all-round mouldings. The top is mounted on the main body and separated with a returned double moulding. The full size front and rear locking doors are break-arch glazed and have red cloth backed top corner frets. All four upright corners are softened with a rebated quarter convex terminating in 'lambs ears'. The short and plain plinth has a moulded top and sits upon four low block feet. The sides have circular-over-rectangular glazed apertures.

The last two photographs show the clock mounted upon a bracket. This is not original to this particular clock but fits it almost perfectly and can be purchased separately. The dimensions are: 9 1/4" high x 12" wide x 8" deep.

* John Sterland is recorded as working in Nottingham before c.1766 until 1788. His workshop was situated facing 'Blackmoor's head'. He was born in 1743 and purchased the stock of Thomas Elliott upon his retirement in 1778. He married in 1768 aged 25. Little is known of this maker but the high quality of his workmanship suggests that he was trained in London. This is a superior clock and has survived in very original condition. The carillon barrel has two peels which is rare as are six movement pillars.

** Originally, these clocks could be carefully carried from room to room still ticking as to not lose any time because of their very robust 'Verge' escapement with attached pendulum or more importantly, to the bed chamber at night whereas the silent option would be selected so the sleeper would not be awoken at each and every hour. Should the time be required during the hours of darkness then a simple tug on the trip repeat cord would sound the last hour passed and any subsequent quarters past that hour.
