A French striking mantel clock in a classical style case. Circa 1820.

A good french clock symbolising Learning and Philosophy.

The finely made, eight day duration, circular movement with countwheel striking of the hours and halfs on a tuned bell and Anchor Recoil escapement with a silk suspension to the pendulum.

Behind a 4" diameter, bowed white enamel dial with outer minute track, Arabic quarter hour numerals and inner, Roman hour numerals. The lower portion of the dial is signed "Ld Bergmiller A' Paris". The rounded matching hands with gilt finish have ornate crown-and-spike ends and the gilt bezel has extremely finely cast acanthus leaf design.

The classical case is of ormolu and patinated bronze with the movement drum upon a scrolled plinth and flanked by two Roman female figures sat reading books and facing outwards. The robed figures are sat upon plinths which in turn are upon the base which has applied gilded brass mounts of fruit and floral swags about a Roman male head. The clock sits upon four small circular feet.

* The design of this superb clock is based upon a drawing of about 1785 by the celebrated ciseleur-doreur Francois Remond and the seated figures are derived from models by the sculptor Louis-Simon Boizot entitled 'L'Etude and La Philosophie'. There are several versions of these clocks many of which can be found in important collections including three in the British Royal Collection. This design of clock almost always commands a very high value often for as much as twenty thousand pounds and more, this example is exceptional value for money. The maker succeeded Rouviere and was working in Paris from 1809 until 1825.

Dimensions:                            11 3/4" high x 14 1/4" wide by only 3" deep.

Circa:                                       1820.

Condition report:                      The clock is original and complete, it is unrestored and has historical
maintenance and unprofessional repairs to the case fixings which is usual to
early French mantel clocks. Though the movement would benefit from a
complete overhaul it is working exceptionally well, keepinng time and striking
correctly. The dial is in excellent condition and the Brocot regulator is
present and working. The case finish is original but worn in areas and dull.

Price:                                        £5,750 in its present condition. A price for any work required by the
purchaser can be advised upon enquiry.
