English Library clock in a rosewood, 5-glass case. By Muston & Gath, Bristol. Circa 1856.

A well-proportioned clock in good, original condition.

The large, eight day duration, four pillar timepiece fusee movement has Anchor Recoil escapement. Also having a regulator style, double support backcock supporting the pendulum suspension bar. The brass faced lenticular pendulum bob is considerably bulbous and has top-mounted micrometer regulation. In addition to the usual brass movement-to-case fixing brackets, the plates also sit upon a seatboard.

The four and a half inch square, silvered brass dial has an engraved and wax-filled outer minute track around Roman hour numerals. It has the maker's signature of "Muston & Gath" (Also known as Garth) and "Bristol" in script to the centre, upper section. The steel hands are of simple spade design and the glazed locking front door has a silvered, chamfered sight frame.

Contained in a typical style, rosewood case with a stepped top containing the thick, bevelled upper glass panel. There is a moulding around the case top edge and the mitre jointed door sits cleanly between this and the larger, Ogee, lower moulding which in turn is upon a small moulding above the straight plinth. The sides also have thick, bevelled glass panels and the case is mounted upon four, squashed bun feet.

* Muston and Garth are known to have been Chronometer makers and the partnership is listed as circa 1856.
