A small, English fusee, bronze and ormolu mantel timepiece by Baetens, London. Circa 1825.
A smart and small mantel clock in super condition.
Stock No: 14414
The circular, eight day duration, chain fusee movement with decorative pillars, flat bottom plates, Anchor Recoil escapement and the backplate bearing the usual screwed on, applied maker's plate that reads "BAETENS, 23 Gerrard Street, Soho, London." It is also stamped inside the frontplate.
The 3" diameter, slightly bowed enamel dial has an outer minute track with inset Arabic 15 minute numerals and inner, Roman hour numerals. The matching gilt brass hands are ring shanked with spade ends. The dial is fixed within a finely cast ormolu bezel with almost 'beehive' decoration all round.
The bronze case has applied ormolu decoration to the front of the upright, break-arch movement housing and also the plinth. The left side has a bronze figure of what appears to be an 18th century explorer, holding a rolled-up chart or map. The case is sat upon four ormolu ball feet.
* It is important to note that the Baetens family were producers of French style clock cases and exquisite bronze and ormolu mounts and artifacts. All of their clocks had high quality movements fitted from good Clockmakers such as Webster and were marked with either an applied plate or the name "BAETENS" stamped into the plates or, as in this case, both. The condition of this piece is extremely good which is probably due to the original high cost and appreciation. They have a working partnership with the well known clockmaker Tupman - it is believed that Baetens bought Tupman's movements and supplied him with cases.
