Rare and Early 'Sheraton' banjo barometer of the first period by Walter Gough, London. Circa 1785.

This is a lovely example of a late 18th Century barometer that has good colour and is in great condition.

The substantial solid case with well-figured mahogany veneer, having a swan-necked pediment with ivory paterae and centre ball finial. Above a waisted trunk that houses an adjustable hygrometer with turning knob, mercurial thermometer glazed box with hinged door and embellished with oval fan inlay and edge, alternating stringing. The circular centre having a silvered and engraved, eight inch diameter dial that bears the maker's signature "Walt(e)r Gough. No. 21 Middle Row Holborn". Also, the rare feature of a well-turned, Sheraton style, glazed wooden bezel that is hinged and fitted with a lock. Both the setting and the reading hands are of 'Arrowhead' style the latter being counterpoised. The lower portion of the case being waisted and having a rounded bottom and conforming fan inlay and stringing. The thick sides of the case are cross-veneered.

* Walter Gough is recorded as a Clock and Barometer maker and a clock made by him is situated in 'King's Dining Room' at Kew Palace. It is part of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II's collection.

** First period banjo barometers are rare especially in good, original condition. Within just a few years they had changed in appearance considerably and adopted brass bezels. They were then almost exclusively made by Italian immigrants.
