English walnut & Marquetry longcase clock with an 11" dial, made by John Clowes of London. Circa 1690.

An exceptional early longcase clock by a 'Great Clockmaker'.

Stock No:   14318

The eight day duration, five finned pillar movement with Anchor Recoil escapement and bell striking the hours with a small, rear-mounted countwheel.

Behind a 10 1/2" (classed as 11") well-executed, square brass dial with silvered chapter ring, subsidiary seconds chapter ring and date ring. The main chapter having Roman numerals within an inner quarter ring and outer minute ring and half hour stylised cruciform half hour marks also, small outer Arabic fives with a division line and four, small, further cruciforms. The seconds chapter having similar Arabic fives with an inner seconds ring. The finely matted centre has ringed winding and seconds holes and a square shaped, chamfered calendar date aperture with profuse outer scrolling. The corners bear elaborated winged head spandrels and the bottom edge of the dial-plate carries the signature of the maker "Jno Clowes in Russell Street Covent Garden". Finally, the well-formed blued steel shaped hands are typical for this maker.

Contained in a walnut and marquetry case of rich colour and good proportions. The now sliding hood having side glasses, marquetry door and front and rear ebonised barley twist pillars with integral, gilded, 'bobbin' capitals. The walnut trunk has panelled sides and a full-length floral marquetry panelled door with cross-grain edge moulding and circular glazed lenticle. Similarly, the base has a single front panel and a plain plinth.

* John Clowes was born about 1651 and was the son of James who was a 'nail maker' of Odd Rode in Cheshire. He was made a Free Brother of the Clockmakers' Company in January 1673 and described as "A great Clockmaker" - this is astonishing considering the fact that he was only 22 years of age. He went on to make many good clocks and his will was proved in April 1717.

** I find this to be an exceptional clock in originality, quality and appearance. The photographs do not do it justice and if you want a lovely example that is not too fussy then this must be seen.
