Stock No:   14346

Movement.

The eight day duration, precisely made movement with triangular pallets, Anchor recoil escapement and unusual rack striking of the hours.

Dial.

The thirteen inch wide, brass break-arch dial is exceptionally pleasing to the eye. The cast Rococo style corner spandrels encompass a broad, silvered chapter ring with large outer Arabic five minute numerals, dotted minute markings, large Roman hour numerals and finally, an inner calendar date chapter that is read from the arrowhead centre-sweep hand. The centre is well-engraved with a crossed diaper pattern and carries the silvered subsidiary seconds ring and lower, shaped and silvered maker's cartouche bearing the words "Finney LIVERPOOL" The other hands are blued steel and are Serpentine style.

The arch has a precisely made phases-of-the-moon disc of two parts, the silvered outer chapter has divisions and large Arabic five-day numerals and the centre has well-painted moons within a starry night sky. The arch border has an applied and silvered inscription plate that bears the expression "On TIME'S uncertain date ETERNAL hours depend".

Case.

The whole case is of well-chosen, rich and figured mahogany of excellent colour, patina and made with great influence of Thomas Chippendale.

The hood has a boxed swan-necked pediment surmounted with three ball and spire finials, the horns have cast brass rosette paterae that flank a blind Gothic arch fret. This sits upon a shaped corbel that cuts nicely into the break-arch door with stepped front. Two recessed panelled areas sit within mouldings and flat short pillars. The four fluted and tapered corner columns have brass Corinthian capitals.

The trunk has a classical blind fret frieze below the Cavetto throat and the full-length shaped top door is framed within top and bottom mouldings and pedestal mounted, fluted, three quarter pillars with turned wooden capitals to the sides.

The base has a shaped top moulding and an applied front panel with inverted corners. This is flanked by applied blind fretwork and the short plinth has a moulded top and sits upon four ogee feet.

* The maker, Joseph Finney usually requires no introduction as he was the most famous Liverpool maker of the 18th century. His clocks are highly collected and considered to be a sound investment. They are of superior quality and his Chippendale examples are simply stunning in appearance and delicately imposing. This example has been extremely well looked after and we have documentation attached to it dating back to 1972 including a valuation certificate stating a value of £2,500 in 1980. Genuine Finney Longcase clocks command a high value and are sought by collectors.
