Very Small hooded wall clock with a silvered dial and in a mahogany case. By George Buckmaster of Royston. Circa 1830.
A much smaller than usual and pretty clock with a long pendulum.

Behind a 5" wide break arch silvered and engraved dial. The chapter having an outer ring, Roman hour numerals and inner divided minute track with half hour diamonds. The corners and the arch have floral design engraving encompassing the bordered maker's name cartouche bearing "G.(eorge) Buckmaster, ROYSTON" underlined with scrolls. The centre tabbed alarum disc has outer Arabic hour numerals and an inner divided track. The tailed blued steel hand is ornate and pierced.
Contained in an attractive solid mahogany case with a large elaborated moulding to the flat top, a plain sliding hood with a break-arch glazed aperture to the front and shaped bracket sides to the carcase. It also has a full-length backboard.
George Buckmaster is recorded as working circa 1828 - 1840 and Brian Loomes suggests that his widow continued to run the business until circa 1866.
Dimensions: 22" high x 10" wide x 7 1/2" deep.
Circa: 1830 though its style suggests earlier.
Provenance: I purchased this item privately and it is new to the market.
Condition: Dirty and worn but in good working condition and keeping time however, the
movement is now lacking its verge Alarum arbor, bell stand and bell BUT, the
crown wheel winding and operating sprocket, lifting and release piece, verge
brakets and under-dial operating spring remain. The 2 dial feet probably
snapped off during a fall and have been replaced with screws. The dial is very
good with minor bruising above the I hour numeral and some loss of wax to
the circles. The case is excellent for its age and usage and is of good colour,
patina and retains its original French polish.
Price: £2,800 in its present condition making it very competitvely priced due to its
small size. A price and timescale for any work required by a purchaser such
as rebuilding the Alarum work can be supplied upon enquiry.
