A British railways fusee wall clock with an 8" dial. Formerly of Lymington Town Station (Hampshire). Circa 1875.

A good example of a small mahogany dial clock by John Walker of London.

Stock No:   14538

The 8 day duration, gut fusee movement with Anchor Recoil escapement, stopwork to the winding and backplate screw-fixed and front-pinned, shaped pillars.

Behind an 8" diameter, flat painted iron dial with its original paintwork. Having an outer, divided minute track with triangular hour markings, inner, Roman hour numerals  and the centre being written with "B. R. S. (brackets removed from the "S" but can still be seen if closely looked at) JOHN WALKER, 1 SOUTH MOLTON ST." above the centre and "LONDON 80 S.W." below the centre. The paired steel hands are painted black and are behind a hinged and glazed spun brass bezel and sight ring.

Contained in a dark mahogany circular case with a one-piece, pegged-on dial surround and a backbox with a side access door to the right. The curved bottom also has a curved, locking and cockbeaded regulation door. The clock also comes with over 50 platform and rail tickets from Lymington Town Station dating from 1987 and 1988.

* This is a genuine railway clock that was re-numbered during 1923 when the railway companies were nationalised into 'British Railways' and registered as 'South Western'. It's a very good example of one of the more desirable, small and numbered dial clocks. It is worth noting that a true representation of the case colour and size of the clock can be seen in the picture that shows a team member holding it. The substantiality of these movements literally fill the backbox. They really are designed to 'last forever'. Also, it is highly important and a valuable feature for the dials of these clocks to have their original background paint - even if 'patched.

Dimensions:                                  10 1/2" high x 10 1/2" wide x 5 3/4" deep.

Circa:                                             1875.

Condition:                                       Very good over all. The movement though totally original, requires a
complete overhaul by myself (included in the purchase price) so will be
fully restored and guaranteed. The dial is also very original with its
original paintwork. The brass bezel is worn but sound as is the case. All
of the pegs are present  and the lock is working. This little clock shows
signs of its long usage but has a good patina and is full of character. It is
in very sound condition with no signs of damage.

Price:                                              £2,950 including movement restoration and full guarantee.

Provenance:                                   Originally sighted at Lymington Town Railway Station then, gifted to an
employee in the 1980's - believed to be upon his retirement. Recently
sold by his family and eventually coming into my possession - after much
chasing around and now, awaiting a new home and chapter in its life.
