Converted English Lantern clock originally circa 1670. Maker: John Harris of London.

An attractive English Chamber clock with later movement.

The substantial eight day duration, high quality, five pillar, double chain fusee movement with 'Half Dead-beat' escapement and rack striking the hours on the original, top-mounted bell. Also having a short internal pendulum and transport locking bracket.

The well made and substantial brass case has an ornamental cast bell 'spider' mounted between the four corner finials and a matching centre finial above the original, heavily cast bell with an astonishing casting flaw to one side. The front of the three matching  'Sea Serpent' cast frets is engraved, hinged brass doors are mounted to three sides between the tapered cast pillars and the front plate has engraving to the corners and a Tulip design to the centre portion. The 6 1/2" diameter, engraved and silvered chapter ring has Roman numerals, inner quarter ring, 'Trident' design, half hour markings and the maker's signature "John Harris (of) London" flanking the figure VI. The black steel hands are cut and pierced and finally, the case is mounted upon four fixed ball feet.

* I purchase these converted clocks because the work carried out to them was not to deceive but to improve. Large sums of money were paid to have these conversions carried out which meant that the clock ran for eight days instead of the usual 12 to 24 hours, the timekeeping was vastly more accurate and the clock did not have to be hung high on a wall because of the ropes and weights but could be placed on a table.

The original maker was most likely to have been John Harris II and he was known as John Harris of Holborne Bridge. He was made free of the Clockmaker's Company in January 1660. This example was originally made over 340 years ago  (King Charles II period) and is an opportunity to own a piece of real history. The 'improvement' is similar to buying a period house that has been modernised for a fraction of the cost of an untouched example.
