A miniature verge escapement lantern alarum clock by William peck of Bolnhurst. Circa 1745.
A very pretty and almost totally original little chamber clock.
Stock No: 14358
The rope driven, posted framed 30 hour duration movement with its original Verge escapement and short attached pendulum. The alarum train is set inside the movement to the backplate with the hammer verge arbor rising up through the top plate to sound on the bell internally. The frame is only 3 1/4" square x 4" high.
The break-arch brass dial measures 5" wide x 6 7/8" high and has a silvered chapter ring with Roman hour numerals and an inner quarter hour divided track, The matted centre has the alarum setting disc with protrusions around its perimeter and the hours indicated with Arabic numerals. The corners have 'plumed head' and floral cast spandrels and the arch has 'punch head' and floral spandrels flanking the silvered maker's nameplate stating "Wm. PECK" (of) "BOLNHURST" (Bedfordshire). The blued steel pierced hand has a setting tail against the alarum disc.
* This is a tiny and exquisite little clock and certainly worthy of a collection. Full restoration was necessary because the movement had been 'overcooked' in cleaning fluid which needed rectifying. Fortunately the movement suffered no harm and its integrity has been fully maintained. Little is known of the maker other than he produced a verge watch which recently came up for sale.
Dimensions: 8 1/2" total height.
Circa: 1745.
Condition: Excellent, fully restored. Doors and weight replaced (as is usual).
