Rare half hour striking, one day duration, English Lantern clock with verge escapement. circa 1670.

A good looking yet plain in appearance, English Chamber clock that is almost 350 years old.

The one day duration, weight and rope driven movement with verge escapement and between-the-trains short pendulum with a replaced bob in the form of a fluked anchor.

The countwheel striking having a rare 24 point star wheel giving hourly striking and a single blow for the halfs.

The original Alarum work, crown wheel and pallets are fitted to the iron backplate between the hoop and spikes, this operates a second and double-headed hammer within the large top mounted bell. The bell 'spider' is mounted on the four corner finials that match the fifth, bell finial.

The three cast frets are matching with the front-most being engraved and of the usual 'Sea serpent' design.

The replaced side doors have cut-out sections to allow the pendulum 'anchor' to protrude at each swing whilst the substantial, unusually plain dial plate carries a 5" diameter chapter ring with Roman numerals, inner minute ring and pronged half hour makings, the centre mounted alarum disc has large Arabic numerals and a tulip engraved centre. The crudely cut iron hand has a tail for the alarum setting.

Though being 'hoop and spike' mounted, the clock comes with a custom made, black oak wall bracket which is optional.

* Half hour striking chamber clocks are very rare and have passing strike only, another example of half hour striking if this type cannot be found and therefore, this example may be unique. Whilst passing strike does not require the use of the striking train and this clock does, the duration is shortened however, 26 hours between windings can still be obtained.

** No maker for this clock can be found but a likely explanation is that is was supplied to the French market (half hour striking was not considered necessary in England) and therefore, it may not have been prudent to bear an English signature at the turbulent period in history that it was made.
